A couple new pencil pieces

Here's a couple new pencil pieces to add to the collection of series of mega work that I'm doing.

The more new pieces I do the more I shove the old ones to the bottom of the pile. Feels good to have a series started, even though it's in the sketch stages.

Or, Go Loin! Whatever tickles your fancy! My friend Alejandro, http://www.aleroart.blogspot.com/ ,and I started a new project where we do a cartoon or movie poster in our own style everyweek. This keeps us motivated and always having fun. This is my version of Voltron, it's more than half done. Just a bit more rendering to do and some effects. I'll post the finished one soon.

The pencil piece here is a more finished version of the one I did about a month ago.

The inked drawing was done yesterday, trying out new inks, nibs,brushes and papers.

These studies are most helpful in my process for finding the right materials. Next step is more studies in color!

I had my great friend Laura model for this piece and I'm proud to say that this penciled piece looks more like her than the photo I took. Fierce with gorgeous features. Finishing up the pencils on this tonight. And to date that'll be 4 down and 16 to go!

Here's the final inks for the Blade Runner sample page. I changed the size and angle of the "spinner" car just to add more foreshortening to the first panel. Lot's of texture and rendering on this page. Enjoy!

I was just in NYC for a week and met up with the writers of BLACK CHERRY BOMBSHELLS.

John and Tony are not only talented but funny and cool as hell! Here's a pic of us at the Zuda anniversary party in NY. Black Cherry Bombshells is live on Zuda.com. Two strips a week check Mondays and Wednesdays for new strips. Post Apocalyptic Vegas with zombies and girl gangs.....you can't get much better than that!

The War to End all Wars

I have an obsession with World War I. I think it's because for the first time it was the war that was globally felt and countries as faraway as French Indochine and French African nations Middle Eastern countries, etc. all involved as well as drafted to fight in Europe. As well as ALL of Europe pretty much and then the US getting involved near the end.

It was also the war that first used chemical weapons and machine style guns and tanks.

Also, the first war to draft non-professional millitary or career military. Such as young boys and men not that well trained. This was the end of chivalry and an all out brutal trench warfare. It was to be the war that ended all wars and cleansed the world to start a new again. Innocence was lost. You can see the changes in people in all art forms following the war. The effect on children and women especially and the poor young men who fought and came back with bad habits or trauma in any form.

The horrors are unimaginable and imagery so strong. To say it simple WAR scares the hell out of me. But, this war imparticular I have some sort of connection with, maybe I was in it?

Here are some drawings and sketches I did while researching books and images of the Great War. (I started a 10 page comic of my own, I'm sure you saw the first penciled page and colored page on here if you scroll down.) Children with gas masks, a police man with a sign that read WE ARE WATCHING YOU (which has nothing to do with the war but more to do with a big brother style painting I had in mind) and a man sculpting a artificial limb for an amputee.

I will have more sketches and images of this "obsession" soon.

So, I decided after working on a project today, to test out the Wacom tablet again by opening up an old pencil drawing file and putting a layer over it in Photoshop, and drawing on top of it to do hand eye coordination practice. It came out pretty good, the character on top is the one that I "traced". You can see the difference in the other character below with the gun. He's the lightly penciled original. The guy with the helmet was the same lightness, then I just sketched on top of him. Good practice! I think it's gonna help me get used to drawing on the tablet much faster and better.

I just got a Wacom draw tablet the other day so I can further my skills in computer coloring and drawing. This is the first time I colored anything fully, especially my own work in Photoshop. The tablet and pen tools are amazing. This drawing I did a couple years ago, a tech-noir steampunk edwardian feel. I tried to keep a muddy feel with the coloring....
